Service Description

Curious about abstract art? In this four-session class, we’ll dive into the world of abstract painting--art that doesn’t look like real life. Students will create abstract art inspired by colorful photos, test out textures and materials, and paint to some mood music, along with other projects. Students can use either acrylic or oil paints for class. Students will explore different methods and motivations for creating abstract paintings. Students will gain better understanding of some of the components of painting that help make good abstract art. Instructor: Michelle Boerio. Projects to include: • Quick mark-making experiments with brushes, palette knives, and improved tools. • Combining the color palette of one photos and composition of another to create colorful paintings. • Creating quick paintings or studies inspired by the mood of different songs. • Simplifying an image to create a more and more abstract painting. • Learn how to incorporate mixed media materials into abstract paintings. Please bring the following materials to class. The instructor will provide all additional supplies. • Two 12”x16” canvases • An assorted set of brushes with at least one 1” width or larger brush" x " large (an old cookie tray or hard plastic sheet would work as well) • Roll of paper towels • A palette on which to mix paint at least • For oil painters: oil paint thinner • Acrylic or Oil paint in the following colors o white o black o cadmium yellow o napthol red or cadmium red medium o quinacridone magenta o ultramarine blue or cobalt blue o raw siena o black (If you find a paint set with most of the colors, that is also acceptable.) *Students should have some basic knowledge of painting to participate in this class. Topics such as the basics of mixing colors and use of different kinds of paint will not be taught.
