Step into the timeless world of classical portraiture with this in-depth drawing workshop inspired by the Old Masters. In this class, we’ll work on toned paper using sanguine chalk and charcoal, echoing the traditional materials of artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Ingres. We'll cover: How to start a portrait the right way Anatomy essentials and structure Review block-in process to set a strong foundation Techniques for modeling form with warmth and subtlety Insights into how drawing naturally connects to painting and color theory Expect a balance of lectures, demos, and extended time working from a live model. I’ll be giving individualized feedback throughout, helping you fine-tune your process and develop a toolkit you can carry forward in your own practice. This is an intimate, focused workshop ideal for anyone serious about improving their portrait skills—whether you're a dedicated draftsman or a painter looking to sharpen your eye. What You'll Learn: • Initiating a portrait with effective techniques • Understanding essential anatomy and structure • Review of block-in process for a solid foundation • Modeling form with warmth and subtlety • Highlights of color theory Sample Workshop Structure: • Day 1: o Lectures and demonstrations o Exercises to refine drawing stages o Quick studies and a master study • Day 2: o Review of key concepts o Application of techniques while working from a live model Materials Provided by Instructor: artist tape, drawing board, extra photos Material Sample List for Student(final list will be in Art Center Documents): Charcoal, Sanguine Chalk, Toned drawing paper, erasers, pencil sharpener. *If enrollment is low the class will be canceled on May 10.
